Hermitages and council border crosses trail

“We do not see things as they are, but rather as we are”.

TRAIL DESCRIPTION

With this trail, we shall find several representative examples of Aspe’s popular religious architecture. Along our route, visitors will find heritage information stands providing further details.

HOW TO ACCESS THE TRAIL

We shall start our trail from Doctor Calatayud park (1) towards Santa Faz street (2). Soon afterwards, we shall see a shrine located in Cruz street (3). Please bear in mind that these crosses were references upon arrival at a town, since this site was bordering crop fields when the cross was first placed here in the 18th century.

At Virgen de las Nieves street, we shall stop to admire a chapel (4) with documentary evidences dating back to 1735. This chapel is dedicated to Our Virgen de las Nieves, patron of Aspe.

We shall continue to wander the streets leading to Barrio Cipreses hermitage (9), a modest construction housing Our Virgen de Fatima. An annual celebration is held in her honour on every 13th May by the local residents.

We shall follow Gabriel Miro street towards Orihuela cross (10), another council border cross preserved in its original location bordering crop fields that marked the edge of the town for those coming from Elche. From this point onwards, we shall advance through the historic centre’s streets, characterised by their irregular layout, leading us back to our starting point at Doctor Calatayud park to mark the end of our trail.

We shall return to the irregular laid out streets along La Rosa street, leading us back to our starting point at Plaza Mayor square.
